The most difficult thing I’ve struggled with is the separating of lust from love. “Where does real love begin?” is the opening line and my life long question.
I had been married for a few years and now had a new baby son. I was experiencing the early success of my solo career after leaving the Sweet Comfort Band.
I had just purchased a brand new high gloss upright grand piano. In just four years I’d gone from living in a garage apartment making a hundred dollars a week, and selling my own blood plasma for gas money, to a owning a three bedroom one bath home!
Interesting, “hope of the broken hearted” was one of the first songs I wrote at this keyboard. A song of acknowledgement that sadness and longing were not removed upon acquiring new “things”.
Success brought opportunities to indulge myself in ways I’d never even considered before. Just a few years earlier I was celebrating Christmas with a neighbor in the driveway between our rentals. It was fast food burritos from a taco shop down the street and we were sitting in the driveway laughin about the absurdity. Responsibilities of personal discipline became more acute with freedom and access.
Everything I associated with “love” at this point lacked a sacrificial quality. I was loving according to what made me feel good about the effort!

Lyrics
Hope Of The Brokenhearted
Where does real love begin?
Can it really last forever?
Keep searchin’ through this fire within,
Seeking without any answers.
All the simple lines I`ve heard before
Doesn’t make it any easier to find.
And I learned about love on the street
From the blind misusers
And they told me that love is a game made of broken rules.
But I know there`s a love that’s complete,
Where there`s nothing missing inside:
The Hope of the Brokenhearted,
Longing for love again.
What is all that love requires?
Will it finally bring contentment?
Or a sacrifice of my desires,
To love as just a humble servant?
Every kind of love I`ve fallen for
Leaves my crying out for something more in the end.
And I learned about love on the street
From the cruel and heartless,
Where love is a game of deceit played by selfish fools, yeah.
But I know there’s a love that’s complete
Where there’s nothing ugly to hide:
The Hope of the Brokenhearted,
Longing for love again.
The Hope of the Brokenhearted,
Longing for love again.
Here`s where real love begins:
Jesus gave His life for sinners.
In the first of ten commands
Demonstrate love to beginners.
He gave His love like no one else before,
And I owe everything I am and more to Him.

My absolute ALL time favorite BD song. My favorite performance was live with only keyboard in Lakeland Florida. It was amazing!!
I met this song when I was 24. I had a rough childhood and it helped me grieve when I needed to. Now it helps me heal and grow. This song is classic and timeless. Thank you Bryan for writing this.
this is a song that speaks to everybody,, when we have learned that love and lust are not the same,, when were young we think we will have it all, but a yearning for that relationship that only Jesus christ can fill, well that is the truest love of all,, Bryon , you rock!!! I have all yopur music and have been sharing you for 26 years,, your music touches people because it is real and heartfelt,, my best writing has always been when I learned to be honest with god and myself,, which always means selflessness,, God bless you , love from Eugene oregon,, tessa
